Inclusive Science and Sustainability Learning at Taarana

30/08/2024

Curiosity about science and sustainability goes hand in hand with inclusive learning.

Taarana School recently organised two educational outings, immersing our neurodivergent students in inclusive science and sustainability.

These hands-on experiences were more than just fun; they were powerful learning opportunities reinforcing classroom concepts like social skills, communication, and environmental responsibility.

Thirteen students and nine staff members first visited the National Science Centre, where curiosity met discovery. The students eagerly explored interactive exhibits at the Creative Laboratory, Wonder Hub, and Tinker Garage, conducting experiments that brought science to life. The highlight was the Obskura XR exhibition, blending virtual reality with scientific wonder.

The trip provided a practical application of the students’ lessons, bridging the gap between theory and real-world science. It showcased how inclusive education can foster a deep love for learning.

Our pre-vocational students visited the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza next, diving into the 3R principles—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. They brought recyclables from home, sorted them, and discovered how these materials could be transformed into creative items.

The students were especially fascinated by Eco-bricks, which demonstrated how plastic waste can be repurposed into building materials.

A mini-workshop at the recycling centre further sparked their creativity, offering practical ideas for upcycling plastic waste. This visit emphasised that even simple actions can significantly impact the environment.

Dr Sunitha Sivakumaran, Taarana’s Principal, remarked, “Curiosity about science and sustainability goes hand in hand with inclusive learning. With the right guidance, students can cultivate a passion for scientific discovery and environmental stewardship.”
