Subang Jaya, April 11, 2026 — On a vibrant Saturday morning, the lush greenery of Tropicana Metropark Urban Park transformed into a sea of support as more than 180 participants gathered for the annual Walk for Autism. Organized by Taarana, the event united families, educators, and community members for a 3km walk dedicated to promoting awareness, understanding, and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Held as a cornerstone of Autism Acceptance Month, the initiative marked its third consecutive year of fostering a more inclusive society through community action.

A Morning of Movement and Community

The event kicked off with an opening address by Datin Sri Umayal Eswaran, Chairperson of RYTHM Foundation, followed by an energetic warm-up session led by Taarana’s dedicated teachers.

The walk served as a powerful visual representation of solidarity, proving that every individual on the autism spectrum deserves a place in a supportive, inclusive environment.

For Dr. Sunitha Sivakumaran, Principal of Taarana, the event is defined by the strength of collective action:

“When a community comes together, it creates something powerful. Through this walk, we hope to provide a safe and joyful space for families and communities to support each other”

This is where the Walk for Autism successfully moved beyond simple awareness and transitioned into meaningful engagement.

Strengthening Community Connections

Beyond the walk, participants engaged with informational booths and activities designed to connect families with experts. Seven vendors, including the Autism Café Project, Ara Damansara Medical Centre, Sun Rehab, and Tropicana Berhad were on hand to provide essential resources.

The presence of these organizations facilitated immediate access to local support while enlivening the atmosphere, ensuring that participants of all ages enjoyed a fulfilling experience.

One parent, Ismail Rasheed, shared how the event has become a meaningful tradition:

“For our family, it’s more than an annual event. It is a reminder that our child belongs here, in a community that keeps showing up,” said the father of Maryam Mahee, a Taarana student from the Early Intervention Programme.

A growing movement for neurodiversity

This year Walk for Autism shows how small actions can create a bigger impact when people come together.

Datin Sri Umayal Eswaran summarized in her speech:

“Every step taken together proves that neurodiversity is not a complication, but something that strengthens our community”.

By encouraging participation and understanding, the event helps build a community where individuals with autism feel accepted and valued in everyday life.
